FINDING D.W.
Joanne Powell (storyboard artist/script supervisor)
suggested D.W. Miller for the role of Spence very early on in
the production, "but he can be quite a handful," she
warned. Andrew R. Powell (writer/director) decided to keep looking,
knowing that Matt Kilo's (MIKE) high energy on the set might very
well be enough to deal with. "I was at a club with my wife,"
Andrew relates, "and I had met D.W. briefly on New Year's
Eve about two months earlier. I asked my wife, 'is that D.W.?'
Neither of us could be sure. Eventually, I decided I had to find
out if he was an actor because, whoever he was, he looked perfect
for the part. I followed him through the club, careful not to
lose him, and finally confronted him." Of course the guy
was D.W., and of course, he was already in the bathroom
standing at a urinal. "I wonder how many Hollywood deals
are made that way? I'm surprised he even talked to me after that."

FALLING FOR FOLEY
When you run out of money and still haven't done
the foley, what do you? You send in the director! "I don't
think many directors spend three days tromping around in slippers
or bare feet in front of a microphone, but the hardest part was
all of the body slams," says "Quitters" director
Andrew R. Powell. "I didn't know how else to do it, so I just
started throwing myself against the wall. I ended up with bruises
all over my back and arms but some of the best damned body hits
you'll ever hear on film!" |

NO BONGLOAD FOR BONGLOAD
Not only had Johnnie Oberg, Jr. (BRADLEY BONGLOAD)
never smoked pot before, but he had never even held a bong before.
During the final rehearsal, it became clear that Johnnie desperately
needed some expert tutelage and fortunately, there was a vastly
knowledgeable cast and crew ready to jump in and assist. It wasn't
long before soda cans and milk containers were fashioned into makeshift
bongs as well. During the shoot, Johnnie was smoking vanilla flavored
herbal cigarettes in the bong. Oberg has still never smoked pot
and, as a devout Christian, probably never will. |
